Santiago - Chile

Metro station entrance at one of the universities, Santiago has a really good clean and spacious metro system...
We rented bikes for a day and cycled around the city.  It's divided into barrios that are all very different from each other and has lots of nice parks but very few cycle paths, so most people seem to cycle on the footpaths .... We really liked the city and met a lot of very friendly Chileans.
The central market...
Menu del Dia at the central market...
 This area is nicknamed 'Sanhatten'...
Graffiti in the Barrio Bellavista...
This bridge had been converted into a theatre...
 The first sign of Christmas...
One of the many great little diners in Santiago with the most enthuasistic and friendly waiters, all dressed in suits with dickie-bows even though they are among the cheapest places to eat in the city, serving hot dogs and sandwichs.  Also, this napkin arrangement seems to be the done thing in Chile...
The recently opened Museo de la Memorias y Los Derechos Humanos, focusing on Pinochet's dictatorship. The building was really impressive and the museum was really interesting with lots of really great video footage. Handcrafts made by political prisoners, unseen footage of the first years following the 1973 coup, letters and drawings from children to their imprisoned parents, tools for torture, legal documents, posters, clandestine publications, propaganda jingles are all on display.  Some of it was really shocking.
Wall in memory of the disappeared...
The really wealthy area 'Alonso' at the north of the city featured many expensive designer shops and commercial art galleries with manicured lawns and people.
 Another great diner...
